Write Up:
Coordinator: Denise Grabowski Starting at the Lubec Trailhead (located between Maris Pass and East Glacier), our group of seven beautiful and adventurous women followed the trail until we came to the basin below Firebrand Pass and Red Crow Mountain. The plan was to go off trail and climb up low benches below the mountain, and then catch a game trail that runs parallel to the mountain, traveling north to drop down to Lena Lake. However, I took a moment to point out the route when I spotted a grizzly moving down the slope below Red Crow, and then it disappeared into the benches we planned to climb. Not wanting to stress the bear or us, I decided to do the trip in reverse, so we continued up the trail to Firebrand Pass. There we caught a game trail and followed it up the south ridge to the Red Crow summit. We enjoyed a nice break with fairly clear views and a nice breeze before following a game trail down the north ridge to the pass between Red Crow and Bearhead. The game trail led us to a waterfall that comes from an underground source just above the west-side of Lena Lake, which was perfect for another break. We made our way up from the lake to the benches and then caught the main trail back to the cars. This trip was between 8 and 10 miles and about 3,600 feet of climbing, and it was a nice complement of on and off-trail travel. This was my first all-women trip and it was a very enjoyable group thanks, ladies! Amy Andreas, Caroline Clemans, Desiree Kentros, Denise Grabowski, Nancy Riva, Susan Giller and Paula Ferguson.
