Write Up:
Maybe it was an omen of the challenges we would face. Nine previous days with temperatures at 90+ and suddenly Saturday had a 100% chance of rain. So goes climbing. Ten climbers met at the Cut Bank trail head at 7:15 am with five making a decision to brave the weather. Rich Briles, Pat Nehmiash, Don Authur, Warren Lane and me. We were rewarded with great temperatures, only 30 minutes of rain and a climb made quite difficult with constant fog that limited visibility to less than a quarter mile most of the day. We were all reminded how we rely so much visual land marks and the value of modern technology. I had done this trip several years ago and a magnificent goat trail was the “yellow brick road” to Kakitos. Not so in the fog but with efforts of Warren, Don, and Pat the route was rediscovered with GPS and smart phone assistance. A big thanks to Rich for his perseverance to continue on when the route finding became quite difficult. The trip was a great example of teamwork. As for the views unfortunately, there were on occasional glimpses of the beauty in the area. The plan to extend the trip to Curly Bear was abandoned with no visual landmarks, limited time and the unknown nature of the route, another day for the goat trail. The trip entailed 16 miles, over 6,000 feet gained in an 11 hour day. We shared a quick celebration of beverages, chips and salsa at the end of another great day in Glacier.
