Rod Graham, Don Arthur, Mike Russell, Sally Russell, Rich Briles, Tim Anderson and Cal Pilskains road and climbed up Braine Mountain on Sunday June 3rd, lucking out on the weather with only misty rain showers on the way down. We started out with approximately 4 miles of MTB riding up old Hemler Creek Forest Service Road (joined on the ride by Alice Ford). Parked the bikes and after about a mile on Hemler Creek trail #20, we took a direct route up the south ridge, skirting cliffs with some rock ramp climbing and then Beargrass to the top of the first ridge. From there it was a challenging climb down the rocks and scree to the saddle between the first south ridge and the main Blaine ridge. Then up some steeper snow slopes and a beautiful ridge walk on both snow and rock to the summit. High clouds allowed a clear 360 degree view, including west to the emerald green Flathead Valley, south to great views of Flathead Lake, the Missions and Swans, north to Doris and Columbia, and east to Great Northern and the distant GNP peaks. We descended to the saddle and climbed back up to the south ridge and then carefully descended down Rod Grahamís scouted snow slope back to Hemler Creek Trail. Saddling up on the bikes made for a fast 4 mile descent to the cars. Our ride/climb was 14 total miles, approximately 4,500 vertical and took 8 hours.
