The original plan for Whitecalf-Kapunkamint was abandoned due to snow conditions, so a reasonable substitute was a much lower elevation peak - Basin Mountain. Starting at Looking Glass Hill, we traversed a high route along the 6400-ft level of Spot Mountain above the trees to minimize bushwhacking. With a mild bushwhack down to Lake Creek above its forks, we thought we had it nailed, only to find the normally small stream a raging torrent. Dragging and pitching logs out across the creek for a bridge proved fruitless apparently no one had an engineering degree. Basin Mountain would have to wait for another time. We took a higher return route across extensive snow fields, which made for smoother travel. Although the day was a worthwhile hike through beautiful wildflower meadows and scenery, the group felt compelled to climb SOMEthing! So they climbed the east summit of Spot Mountain while Greg roamed the wildflower meadows of the mid slopes. Their descent was capped off with a great glissade on perfect snow. A wonderful day in one of the least visited areas of the Park. In the group photo taken at mid elevation with Basin Mtn in background, members are L to R: Greg Kushnak, Caitlin Caltabiano, Frank Wesolovski, Gary Seubert, James Hulvat, April Seubert, and David Schuler. In the second group photo on the east summit of Spot Mtn, L to R: Gary Seubert, April Seubert, James Hulvat, Caitlin Caltabiano, Frank Wesolovski (David Schuler behind camera).
