Write Up:
Coordinators Mike Contrada and Cindy Weaver led a group of climbers up MEDICINE GRIZZLY PEAK, 8,315 feet. Adam McClure, Nathan Carlson, Thomas Farago, Rob Bates and George Sherman rounded out the group. The group met at the Cut Bank Ranger Station and hiked the road to the trail head at Cut Bank Campground. Continuing up the trail, past Atlantic Creek junction toward Morning Star Lake, we left the trail about 2 miles past the junction. We navigated through a short ‘brush whack’ toward a large buttress heading through a grassy, low-angle- cliff slope. We left Rob Bates (not feeling well) at the shoulder below the buttress and traversed along a goat trail accessing the upper basin cautiously making our way up a seeping, narrow moss- covered area. The bowl below the peak hosts an unnamed lake. Adam and Nate descended a bit to the shoreline of the lake. The rest of the group traversed a massive scree field to join them on more goat trails (love those goats) leading to the meadow above the cliffs. Note: shoreline of the lake is the easiest route. We climbed through a scree section heading for the low spot on the ridge above. Following the ridge and making our way through various cliff bands and ramps to reach the summit. Retraced our steps (except for along the lake shore this time) for return route. For its relatively low elevation, this was a very worthy peak!
