Write Up:
The beautiful Bitterroot Mountains were the setting for our GMS climb of Castle Crag on Saturday September 14th. The group included Austin Lindsay, Britt Lindsay, Mark and Nichole Pearson, Jill Webster, Adam McClure, Paul Jensen and his guest Kimberly Meade White, Jennifer Franklin and coordinators Gail and Dell Meuchel. Of course I cannot fail to mention “Lefty” Mark and Nicole's Terrier mix dog. The “Crag” is somewhat a climb of trust as the peak is not visible until you are seven miles up the Sheafman Creek drainage. All agreed that the wait was worth the trek. The summit rises 1,500 feet off of Knaack Lake and dominates the skyline. Fall colors were evident on the trail and fall mushrooms plentiful. Jennifer easily gathered dinner for the evening. Granite slabs, a Bitterroot trademark, paved our approach looking like ocean waves. Britt, Paul and Kim found an interesting cave and took a somewhat narrow passage to the south ridge. It was short, but a squeeze at the exit. A methodical boulder hop followed to the summit. Mark, Nichole and Lefty waited at Aichele Lake for our return as the boulders were too much for Lefty. Gail's famous cowboy caviar and salted nut rolls were a delicious topper for the day. As usual the best part of the day was the sharing of stories with old and new friends.
