Write Up:
An outing in the Bitterroot Mountains was on the menu for nine GMS stalwarts on Sunday September 20th. Castle Crag via the Sheafman Creek drainage was the destination. It was a bluebird late summer day with a cool breeze and temperatures in the mid 60's. The reds and golds of fall greeted as at Knaack Lake just below the summit block. Carly Putman, Brain Kennedy, Ken McDermott, Denis Davies, Don Arthur, Frank Wesolovski, Robin Young joined Dell and Gail Meuchel on this 14 mile adventure. The “Crag” (a 500 foot granite wall did not reveal itself until we were 6 trail miles into the journey) was a spectacular sight to say the least. Frank led a challenging route up the sloping granite slabs that rose from Knaack Lake with Ken, Don, Robin and Carly. We all ventured out on the slabs for an adventuresome decent. We split into two groups for the upper accent and met for a “boulder traverse” to the southwest face and up to the summit. Don, Frank and Robin's accent route proved to be an “interesting” and shorter route back to the granite slabs. The views from the summit, in fall colors, must be seen to believe. The sea of peaks around us from southwestern Idaho to the Pintlar Range in the east was incredible. A fabulous climb to be should be shared in the future and could become a GMS classic. The best part of the climb was sharing the adventure with GMS friends. The post climb beverages and chips went down free and easy.
