Write Up:
Sunday August 24th in the Bitterroot Valley our GMS group was awash in heavy clouds and fog. The previous week's rain was gone and the sun brought a bank of moisture. Dell and Gail Meuchel, Laurel Vielle, Tim Sharp and Robin Young were ready to attempt North Canyon Peak just west of Hamilton. The day was cool and the trail a five mile jaunt up Canyon Creek, brushy with a shower every step. The five of us were soaked within ten minutes and the trip would be like that to the summit. At about three and a half miles the trail follows a steep up hill grade gaining nearly 1000 feet in a half mile. Steep indeed. The rest of the trip found us bounding over large granite slabs with occasional glimpses of Canyon, North Canyon and Sheer Point. We were given some hope throughout the trip that the clouds might lift but found ourselves o the final summit push with zero visibility. We did find the summit only to sit and enjoy our lunch with views of about ten yards. Hardly what we hoped for. Originally we hoped to also summit Sheer Point but with no visibility what would be the “Point”. Of course on our way out the clouds did lift and give us a since of the grandeur of the area. Canyon Creek is well worth another visit.
